Charm Packs - 5 inch Squares
Charm quilts are known by other intriguing names like the Odd Feller quilt and Beggar quilt. Each one describes an attribute of these quilts. The name "Odd Feller" comes from the idea that no two pieces of fabric in a charm quilt should be the same. The name "Beggar" refers to the common practice of early quilters to ask for bits of fabric from their friends and neighbors in order to have enough scraps to complete their quilt. Like the "charm quilts" these packs were name for, each fabric in the pack appears only once unless otherwise specified. The charm fabrics are five inch squares.
Jelly Rolls or 2 1/2 Inch strips
Jelly rolls are technically charm packets - that is each fabric in the roll or strip bundle is unique. Jelly rolls from a fabric collection tend to include one strip from each fabric in the collection, while bundles of 2 1/2" strips from batiks and Stonehenge fabrics tend to represent different hues and patterns of a single color family. Each jelly roll or strip set contains one strip of each fabric unless otherwise specified. Strips are 2 1/2" wide by the width of the fabric. Layer Cakes and 10 inch Squares
Layer Cakes are pre-cut selections of 10" x 10" squares of fabric. The term layer cake was coined originally by Moda Fabrics but several fabric companies now create 10" collections of fabric. The groups are similar to a charm pack but a larger size.
